Fort William Henry, New Harbor, Maine
This was a nice stop after we checked out Pemaquid Point Lighthouse as it was only a short drive. In between both places is also a beach, called Pemaquid Beach that would also be fun to stop at for a few hours! So go check out my posts linked below. There’s just a few great places in this area, it is perfect to make a day out of them all!
Location and Parking
Fort William Henry is only 10 minutes from Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. There’s plenty of free parking here. There’s two parking lots, make sure you pull into the first one right next to Fort William Henry. My husband and my sister’s husband, who was in the car ahead of us, drove right past it and parked near the restaurant there, The Contented Sole, and Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site. The walk was a little too far with the kids, as it was hot and sunny.
Fees and Hours
It is hard to find out info online exactly when it is open and I don’t remember anything specific. We went during the summer around 11am and it wasn’t too busy. According to some information online it is only open May-October. It is actually closed this winter (2023/2024) for renovations. There is a small self-service pay station at the entrance with just a few dollars required.
The Fort
I really like this fort because the views at the top are beautiful! It’s totally worth the quick trip! There’s also some old historical information inside the fort for some learning which is always nice (when the kids aren’t running away and you have time for it). I also like this fort because the top actually has solid railings and it doesn’t feel unsafe like some other forts we have visited.
