Owls Head State Park

Owl's head state park with kids

Owls Head State Park, Owls Head, Maine

My parents visited Owls Head State Park prior to visiting with my kids so they knew how beautiful it was! It was perfect because they also knew the park is small and the stairs to the lighthouse are a lot. We visited the Coastal Children’s Museum before our visit here to make the most of our morning in this area. The kids were definitely too tired to walk all the stairs to the lighthouse, but we packed a lunch and had a great morning! Check out my post on the Children’s Museum linked below to add some more fun to the day!

Fees and Parking

It is free to enter! There is a suggested donation of $1 around the lighthouse but since we didn’t make it up there, I’m not sure where that is. I’m sure it’s just a self pay station though. The parking lot is pretty big and there was plenty of parking even though it was a busy day.

Picnic tables near the parking lot

We packed a lunch in the morning before heading out and I suggest you do the same if you want to visit here! Owls Head State Park is a pretty small park. Even if we would have walked to the lighthouse we probably could have been in and out of there within an hour. There are some picnic tables right near the parking lot with views of the ocean behind some tall pine trees and it’s beautiful!

Bathrooms

There is a small outhouse next to the parking lot for use if you need it.

Rocky beach

There is a very rocky beach here that we loved for a quick walk! The path getting down to the beach though is very steep and you have to use caution. Below are the pictures of the beach and I loved the contrast of the large pine trees next to the ocean, probably one of my favorite pictures that we have!

Lighthouse

There is a cool lighthouse at Owls Head that I wish we could have seen! My parents really liked it but as it is a little bit of a walk from the parking lot and then there are a lot of stairs at the lighthouse itself, we knew it would be too much for the kids. In the pictures from my mom below you can see all the stairs! It definitely seems beautiful and worth the trip, so maybe we will go back and visit!
