Stonington, Maine with kids

Stonington, Maine

I’m not going to pretend I know all there is to know about this ADORABLE seaside town. We had a quick visit to Stonington, Maine for lunch when we were vacationing in the area and it was so perfect. I have to at least mention it on my blog! It’s definitely on my list of places to return to soon, so I will update this post when I do.

Location

Stonington, Maine is located on Deer Isle, which is in between Rockland and Acadia National Park. When we vacationed in the area we stayed in Penobscot, Maine and the drive was about 45 minutes. The location of that rental house was about an hour to Bar Harbor as well, so check out my ‘Stays’ page or the link below for info on that house we vacationed at and loved!

Make sure you grab some ice cream

We had packed a lunch but of course nothing compares to peanut butter and jelly like an ice cream does! We found a cute little place with outdoor tables called Stonington Ice Cream Company. My husband was able to get a lobster roll and the kids loved their ice cream! We visited during the week at the end of September and they were open!

Parking and where to walk around

There is plenty of street parking around town and some small parking lots. We just found a random spot on Main Street that had free street parking and we walked around. There are nice benches and a small garden across the street from Stonington Ice Cream Company. We sat there for a little bit because the views of the harbor are BEAUTIFUL. We really need a longer vacation there because just writing about it makes me really want to go back!

Take the scenic route on the way back home

We didn’t take Route 15 or Route 15A when heading out and instead we drove along Sand Beach Road and found a great spot to pull off the road and go exploring! It’s hard to explain exactly where it is, as I can’t even tell looking on a map, but if you are on that road, keep your eye out for a pull off on the left! Below I attached pictures of the small beach but it was really cute and had a trail in the woods that led to some more climbing rocks for the kids. The views here for classic Maine, with the pine trees along the coast line and a lighthouse far off into the distance.
