About me

Nice to meet you

Hi I’m Rachel! I’m a mom of 3 boys, 6, 4 and 2 years old and we love going outside. All three of their names start with the letter B, as well as my 2 nephews and my husband and brother-in-law’s names. My mother-in-law refers to all of them as her ‘bees’ which is a lot easier than trying to call them all the correct names! So that is where the ‘bees’ in My Maine Bees comes from!

I did not grow up in Maine and going to the beach was not a regular thing for me growing up. I’d usually go only a few times a year but I’ve always been so drawn to it. When my husband and I were dating, his work brought him to the NH seacoast and I fell in love with it! I couldn’t imagine being far from the ocean ever again so we moved to Maine and I made going to the beach a very regular thing. We quickly had 3 kids and I’ve learned how to incorporate my love for the ocean with kids and a busy schedule.

Three boys have a lot of energy and we don’t even get outside as much as they would like and request to, but when we do we try and find fun places to go! Sometimes our trips are quick, only a couple hours, so I love to find new places to explore to keep it interesting. I am also a nurse and I work per diem day shift. I previously worked on a neuro-trauma step down unit for almost 8 years and one of the main things I learned is how important it is to have a healthy work life balance in order to process and get through the things I have seen at work. One of the best ways I do that is by going to the beach. There’s just something about the ocean that I can’t get enough of and it helps me slow down and reset. So, even though I’m not familiar with everywhere we are going and some mornings I just find somewhere quick and last minute, it is always somewhere with views of the ocean and we all love it! As it is with 3 kids there’s almost always crying, so sometimes I take long drives so they can nap. I try and keep it as real as possible on Instagram so go follow me there so you can see that getting out and doing what you want to do is still possible with kids!

Upcoming trips

This summer we are going to go to Hermit Island Campground for the second time and I can’t wait! We are also looking at many more Hipcamp sites we want to visit too. We love how affordable camping is.

I also desperately want a vacation in Deer Isle, Maine again near Stonington. It’s a little bit of a drive but totally worth it!

My favorite place in Maine

It is hard to come up with just one favorite! I love so many places for so many different reasons.

My favorite beach for wide, flat sand (if that is your thing) is Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg. But my favorite beach for rocks and climbing and exploring tide pools is Fort Foster in Kittery Point.

My favorite playground is Mother’s Beach Playground in Kennebunk, but the parking here is tough in the summer.

My favorite lighthouse is Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in New Harbor as parking is easy and there’s a beautiful area to sit and have a picnic or have lunch at a restaurant.

My favorite place in New Hampshire

My favorite place in New Hampshire is a toss up between two places that both offer the same things! They both have lighthouse views, a fun playground right next to parking and bathrooms, and a beach!

My number one, as the beach is definitely better, is Great Island Commons in New Castle.

My second favorite, a very close second is Odiorne Point State Park in Rye.
