Fort Stark, New Castle, NH

Fort Stark State Historic Site is an abandoned old fort with walking trails along the ocean. There are views of Whaleback Lighthouse, Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse and the Isle of Shoals on a clear day.

Parking and Hours

Fort Stark is hidden down at the end of a quiet street. There is a small parking lot but it is plenty big enough for the visitors. Fort Stark is free to park and free to enter as the park is run by volunteers only. The few times we have visited there was never a problem with the gate being closed, but I have read online some people have encountered that. According to online, the hours the fort is open is 10am-6pm daily beginning the end of May to the beginning of October.

Walking Path

There is a mowed walking path along the ocean with lighthouse views and so much room for kids to run around!

Use Caution

Like all the old forts in the area I would definitely recommend using caution with kids around! My kids love to climb but there are not always good railings on stairs or at the top of all the forts. We love exploring new places and it seems pretty self explanatory to me, but I can’t talk about these old forts without saying to be careful!

Check out the town Website for more info

Be sure to check out the website below if you are headed there because it states they will be closed for the spring of 2024 for updates!
